The artificial intelligence revolution is just getting started, and that means there are opportunities for investors to scoop up some names at a discount, according to Evercore ISI. Yet adoption is low, with less than 5% of U.S. firms reporting using AI, he said, citing U.S. Census Bureau data. To find "AI revolutionaries" that are trading at a discount, Evercore ISI looked for companies in the Russell 1000 with strongly trending AI mentions — either surpassing the index or the company's sector average. One of the names on the list is Uber Technologies , which mentioned AI 17 times last year. The company is also using AI to increase productivity.

US stocks could be stuck in quicksand for the rest of 2024 despite robust earnings growth, but investors shouldn't panic. Wall Street expects double-digit earnings growth in 2024. The consensus estimate for S&P 500 profits is about $244, which would be up from $220 in 2023. The so-called SMID-cap cohort lagged its larger peers again in the first quarter, posting a solid 7.6% total return, while the S&P 500 surged 10.6%, including dividends. Six sell-side research analysts cover the typical stock in the SMID-cap S&P 1000 index compared to 17 analysts for the average S&P 500 member, Belski wrote.

Laggard stocks that have underperformed the broader market could offer investors a good portfolio hedge, according to Evercore ISI. "We believe these stocks will outperform should the market continue higher as investors realize their unique earnings trajectory and valuation appeal," he said. "We also believe that these names will outperform in a correction given they have not participated fully in 2024's momentum." Evercore ISI has assigned the stock an outperform rating, although most analysts covering the stocks rate it as a hold. Most analysts covering the name have assigned it a buy rating — in line with Evercore ISI's outperform rating — with analyst consensus seeing a 5% rally ahead.

Some Wall Street analysts are bracing for a pullback in Nvidia shares after the chipmaker reports fiscal fourth quarter results after the bell Wednesday. "We reiterate Buy/top pick ahead of NVDA Feb-21 earnings but won't be surprised to see a notable but brief pullback after the recent parabolic run-up in the stock," wrote Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya in a recent note. Nvidia shares slid more than 4% during Tuesday's session, but they have surged 40% in 2024. "Hence, we see limited room for further earnings upside in 2024 relative to the sales and earnings surprise that we saw in 2023." Even if Nvidia tops estimates, some on Wall Street anticipate a post-earnings decline akin to what's occurred during previous prints.

Evercore ISI's Julian Emanuel thinks Nvidia's monster rally is fueling a fear of missing out in the market. "That's the first time that's happened since 2021 for us," the firm's senior managing director said on CNBC's "Fast Money" on Monday. In his Sunday note, Emanuel warned clients there are similarities to Y2K emerging, particularly when it comes to momentum. Meanwhile, Nvidia , the global leader in artificial intelligence chips, is up 46% so far this year and 240% over the past year. "If you can't see yourself being a buyer down there, you should probably lighten up a little bit," said Emanuel.

While most of Wall Street expects good news this earnings season, so far results have been mixed. 17 small-cap earnings surprisesSpeaking of earnings, Carey Hall highlighted the best investment factors among small-cap stocks this earnings season. "So far in January, Estimate Revisions and Earnings Surprise have been two of the most alpha-generative small cap factors (long-short spreads of +4ppt/+3ppt, respectively)," Carey Hall wrote. To help find the stocks most likely to surprise to the upside during the rest of earnings season, Carey Hall screened for small- and mid-cap stocks that Bank of America analysts believe could see earnings come in above consensus estimates. Finally, she sorted through the results and highlighted only those stocks that were buy-rated by Bank of America.

The market is going to worsen early in 2024 before recovering, according to Evercore ISI. The firm sees the S & P 500 falling in the first half of next year to 3,970 as a "recession materializes and politics [amplify] volatility." An inverted yield curve also portends the start of a recessionary period in the first quarter of 2024, he added. "'Defense Wins Championships' is a consistent theme between [the] last hike and first cut in the recession playbook," said Emanuel. By comparison, the S & P 500 is up 20.1% year to date.

The S & P 500 has successfully weathered several key tests and should be in line for a year-end rally, according to Evercore ISI. "The implications set the S & P 500 on course to our year-end 4,450 PT, with a potential for overshoot to YTD highs," Emanuel continued. If the S & P 500 hits that mark, it means that the stock index will rise another 2% by the end of the year. As earnings season grinds on, Wall Street has been pleasantly surprised by the results. Sometimes the pros might be bearish on a stock, while simultaneously raising their earnings expectations for that very same company. Taking advantage of the difference between what Wall Street says will happen and where they expect earnings to go can prove a profitable trading strategy. Just ask Sam Burns, founder and chief strategist of Mill Street Research, an independent investment research firm geared towards institutional investors. Burns will then take those stocks and run them through his proprietary Monitor of Analysts' Earnings Revisions model.

How does a government shutdown affect the stock market? As far as directly affecting the stock market, however, it would be unusual for a government shutdown to be deeply detrimental. According to Evercore senior managing director Julian Emanuel, "the history of government shutdowns has been largely irrelevant for the stock market. It didn't in 1954 and it didn't in 2020, two 'tight government' years," Emanuel wrote. "But when stocks play politics like they are now and will be for another 13+ months, it does mean more volatility."
